OVHcloud Alternatives: 6 Providers Compared for 2026
OVHcloud Alternatives: 6 Providers Compared for 2026

The best OVHcloud alternative depends on why you are leaving. If you want the lowest raw price for Linux, look at Hetzner. If you want a Windows license bundled into the bill, look at Contabo, Kamatera or a Windows-first host like us. If you want a big developer cloud with many regions, look at Vultr or DigitalOcean. Below we compare them on the things that decide the move: price, Windows licensing, support, billing clarity and latency.
TL;DR
- People rarely leave OVHcloud over hardware. Reviewers point to support responsiveness and billing transparency as the main reasons.
- Hetzner is the usual pick for Linux price-to-performance, but it is unmanaged and leans toward bring-your-own-license on Windows.
- For Windows RDP, check the license line first: it is the biggest hidden cost, and some “Windows VPS” lists include Linux-only hosts.
- Pick a datacenter on the same continent as your users. Latency matters more than a few dollars a month.
- AceRDP is a Windows RDP and KVM VPS host on AMD Ryzen with NVMe, Netherlands and US locations, and plans from 15 EUR per month.

Why people look beyond OVHcloud
OVHcloud is a large European provider with a broad catalog and cheap entry plans. A March 2026 price change put its entry VPS-1 at $6.46 a month for 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, which is still strong on paper. The complaints are about everything around the server.
Industry reviewers say companies tend to migrate when support-heavy workloads outgrow the support model or SLAs they have. A French comparison of Hetzner, OVH and Contabo notes that users often report slow support and complicated billing as pain points. The same review credits OVHcloud with a larger global footprint and unlimited traffic on many plans, with speed caps that rise by tier.
Other reviewers describe the OVHcloud Manager control panel as confusing. If that matches your experience, a clearer panel and faster human answers may be worth more than any hardware difference.
Not every comparison favors the alternatives. One Hetzner vs OVHcloud review names OVHcloud the overall winner, citing 24/7 support and enterprise features. So decide what you are optimizing for before you move.
What to check before you choose
Five criteria separate a good move from a regretted one.
- Windows licensing. Many low-cost hosts advertise base compute and add a monthly Windows Server fee. On the VPS-1 plan, one US price survey says OVHcloud adds $9.00 a month for Windows, and $9.60 on VPS-2. Compare the all-in figure, not the headline.
- OS support. Some comparison sites list Linux-only providers as Windows options. Confirm the host deploys Windows Server 2022 or 2025 and supplies the license.
- Size. For interactive RDP, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is the practical minimum. Smaller plans tend to stutter during Windows Updates or Defender scans.
- Storage. Windows generates far more disk I/O than Linux during maintenance, so NVMe matters.
- Location. Experts advise putting the datacenter on the same continent as the people who connect. A cheap server 150 ms away feels slow every minute you use it. Our guide to fixing remote desktop latency shows how to measure it.
The alternatives, one by one
Hetzner
Hetzner is the name that comes up first in community threads, including the r/homelab discussion that ranks for this topic. One 2026 comparison lists Hetzner from $3.99 a month against $6.46 for OVHcloud and calls it the winner on price-to-performance. The French review credits it with minimal CPU overcommitment, billing by the hour and typically 20 TB of monthly traffic.
The trade-off: it is unmanaged, and for Windows it caters more to bring-your-own-license users. Good for self-sufficient Linux teams. Less so if you want a ready Windows desktop.
Contabo
Contabo is the budget Windows bundle. As of July 2026, one review lists it around €10 a month all-in for 4 vCPU and 8 GB with the Windows Server license included. The saving comes with the usual budget-host questions about support depth and performance consistency, so test before you commit production work.
Kamatera
Kamatera is the flexible option: about $19 a month for 2 vCPU and 4 GB with hourly billing. It suits teams that want to size every component and pay by the hour. It costs more than Contabo at the entry level.
Vultr and DigitalOcean
Both are developer clouds with API-driven deployment. A 2026 price comparison lists Vultr with 32+ locations, NVMe storage and per-second billing, and DigitalOcean with 15 regions and managed add-ons such as databases. Vultr, the same survey of US prices says, adds the Windows license at checkout on top of the plan price. DigitalOcean also publishes its own list of OVHcloud alternatives, which is worth reading with the usual caution that it is written by a competitor.
AceRDP
We are a Windows RDP and KVM VPS host built on AMD Ryzen CPUs, DDR5 RAM and NVMe storage, with servers in the Netherlands and the US. You deploy Windows or Linux through an automated portal, provisioning is instant, and DDoS protection and 24/7 technical support are included. You can pay by card or crypto. Plans start at Bronze, 15 EUR per month, and Silver is 25 EUR per month.
Side-by-side comparison
Figures come from the sources linked above and change often. Check each provider’s page before ordering.
| Provider | Entry price noted in sources | Windows license | Billing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OVHcloud | From $6.46/mo (VPS-1) | Add-on, about $9.00/mo on VPS-1 | Monthly | High-bandwidth workloads, large footprint |
| Hetzner | From $3.99/mo | Mostly bring your own | Hourly | Self-managed Linux teams |
| Contabo | About €10/mo for 4 vCPU / 8 GB | Included | Monthly | Budget Windows |

A note on Windows licensing for businesses
If you run RDP for staff or customers, licensing is a compliance matter, not only a cost line. Microsoft has announced that after September 30, 2025, SPLA licenses, including RDS SALs, are no longer permitted on Listed Providers such as Azure. Businesses must move to other models, such as RDS CALs with active Software Assurance.
That is a rule about Azure and similar providers, not a statement about any particular host. The practical step is the same everywhere: ask your provider in writing who covers which license for your exact workload. Take your Microsoft licensing reseller or an IT licensing specialist into the conversation before a migration with many users. We cover the Dutch angle in our piece on Amsterdam RDP and clear RDS licensing.

Our perspective
We build Windows RDP servers, so we see why customers leave general-purpose clouds. It is almost never a benchmark. It is a Windows license that appears as a surprise line, a ticket that waits, or a datacenter that sits an ocean from the people typing into it.
So we design around those three things. We put modern Ryzen CPUs and NVMe under Windows, because a remote desktop feels the CPU in every click and the disk in every update. We offer the Netherlands and the US so you can sit near your users. We publish plan prices on our site and automate provisioning so a server is ready when you order it, not after a ticket.
Our advice, even where it does not point to us: if you are a Linux team that enjoys managing its own servers, Hetzner is a hard price to beat. If you are a trader, an agency or a business that needs a Windows desktop that simply works with someone to call, a Windows-first host is the better fit. Ask every provider, us included, for the all-in monthly price and the support channel before you pay.
— AceRDP
Which one fits your situation
You run Linux and manage servers yourself. Hetzner or Vultr. Price and hourly billing matter more than hand-holding.
You need the cheapest Windows box that works. Contabo’s bundle is the one to test first, with the entry-size caveat above in mind.
You want a developer cloud with many regions or managed databases. DigitalOcean or Vultr.
You need Windows RDP for trading, agency work or a team, with Ryzen speed and human support. That is the job we built AceRDP for. Our guides on Windows VPS performance and licensing cost and US Windows VPS latency show how we test. If you are choosing between several hosts, our comparison of VPS providers widens the field.

Your servers will mainly serve European users. Read our Europe VPS location checklist before picking a region.
Moving off OVHcloud: a short plan
- List what runs where. Note OS, license type, open ports, backups and any IP-based allowlists.
- Test before cutting over. Order a month with the new host and run your real workload. For RDP, measure latency from your actual users’ locations.
- Check traffic needs. OVHcloud plans often advertise unlimited traffic with speed caps. Hetzner typically includes 20 TB. Confirm your volume fits.
- Lower DNS TTLs a few days ahead, copy data, then switch.
- Keep the old server a week until you are sure nothing is missing.
If part of your stack is a website rather than a server, the migration may also be a chance to tune it. A Ghost publisher, for instance, can compare caching plugins for Ghost alongside the host move, since caching often changes page speed as much as hardware does.
Try a Windows-first alternative
If your reason for leaving is Windows cost, support or latency, start with our plans: Bronze at 15 EUR per month, Silver at 25 EUR per month, and larger tiers up to Apex at 160 EUR per month. Servers deploy from the portal, with Netherlands and US locations. See the AceRDP plans or browse the knowledgebase for setup guides first.
FAQ
Is Hetzner better than OVH?
On price and consistency, several 2026 comparisons say yes. One lists Hetzner from $3.99 a month versus $6.46 and credits it with stable CPU performance and straightforward billing. Other reviewers favor OVHcloud for 24/7 support and enterprise features, so the answer depends on whether you manage servers yourself.
Is OVHcloud an American company?
No. OVHcloud is a European provider, and the European Alternatives directory lists it among European cloud services. It also operates a US cloud, which benchmark sites test separately, for example in Hetzner vs OVHcloud US tests.
What is the best OVHcloud alternative for Windows RDP?
Choose a host that deploys Windows Server 2022 or 2025, includes or clearly prices the license, uses NVMe, and has a datacenter near your users. Contabo suits tight budgets, Kamatera suits custom sizing, and we built AceRDP for Ryzen-powered RDP with support included.
How much RAM does a Windows RDP server need?
Treat 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM as the floor for interactive use. Smaller plans commonly stutter during updates and Defender scans. Add more if several users share the server.
